April 26th, 2010 at 3:49 pmPeople like to be compensated for their efforts. Quality software requires a lot of effort. You cannot compensate these programmers without making a profit.
The GNU Project’s relative lack of progress is testament to this.
I have nothing against free software, and I am aware of some of the injustices of DRM, but the idea that it’s unethical to profit on software is ludicrous.

The BSD license does not protect anything. It allows for unscrupulous individuals to take source code, modify it and close it up – Apple’s Macintosh OS/X comes to mind, which is the most painful failure FreeBSD has ever had to endure (Apple basically took FreeBSD, called it ‘Mac OS/X’ and rips off customers by appealing to the cheapest of human tendencies: conformism).
